When Cambridge Health Alliance’s three acute care facilities experienced rises in ED flow and wait-time complaints, they knew the ED process needed an overhaul. They abandoned their traditional triage and registration model, installed “patient partners” to greet and guide patients, and established a “rapid assessment” section where a physician assistant and a nurse quickly assess the patient need and make treatment choices. Within a year of the change, median length of ED stay was cut nearly in half to less than 140 minutes and patients who left the ED without being seen dropped from over 4% to less than 0.5%. CHA has since refined the rapid assessment concept and solved another ED bottleneck—miscommunication during handoffs between providers—while reinforcing links between ED and primary care to close gaps in the continuum of care.

Melisa Lai Becker MD
Site Chief of Emergency Medicine, Whidden Hospital Campus
A dual ABEM board-certified in emergency medicine and medical toxicology, Melisa Lai Becker joined CHA in 2007. Previously, she had been the associate director of medical/surveillance at the American Association of Poison Control Centers in Washington, D.C., and an emergency physician with Prince George's Hospital Center (George Washington University) in Maryland. Dr. Lai Becker completed fellowship training at the Harvard Medical Toxicology Fellowship and graduated from the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency (Mass General/Brigham & Women's/Boston Children's).
Luis Lobón MD
Site Chief of Emergency Medicine, Cambridge and Somerville Hospital Campuses
Dr. Lobón joined CHA in 2007 and has played a critical role in ED enhancements in efficiency, quality, and patient flow. Board-certified in emergency medicine and a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, Dr. Lobón has been recognized for his contributions to the improvement of emergency medical services in the region and is past president of the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians, serving on its board of directors since 2007.
Assaad Sayah MD
Senior Vice President of Primary and Emergency Care and Chief of Emergency Medicine
Since joining CHA in 2006, Dr. Sayah has led advancements in the ED at CHA's three hospital campuses, resulting in improvements in efficiency, quality, volume, and patient satisfaction. Dr. Sayah serves as chairman of CHA's chiefs council, CHA's medical staff president, and is on the faculty at both Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health. His awards include the President's Award and Vanguard Award from the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians, the America's Top Physicians distinction in 2007 and 2008 from the Consumers Research Council of America, and the EMS Physician of the Year Award from the Metropolitan Boston EMS Council.
Charlene Scarpa RN
Associate Chief Nursing Officer of Emergency, Perioperative & Endoscopy Services
Charlene Scarpa has more than 15 years of management experience in multiple specialties. In her current role, she provides strategic and operational leadership for CHA's three-campus emergency department with a total of more than 100,000 annual visits. She ensures quality measures are achieved in the service lines and oversees program development and fiscal accountability for emergency department and perioperative services. Scarpa previously served as associate chief nurse of surgery/specialty areas at North Shore Medical Center in Salem, Mass. Her prior roles include nurse manager for emergency services at CHA, patient care director of endoscopy at North Shore Medical Center, and numerous other clinical and management positions at Massachusetts General Hospital, Salem Visiting Nurse Association, Salem Hospital, and Whidden Hospital Home Care/Hospice.
